A custom 3D printed holder works best when the measurements describe the object, the way it will be inserted, and the space where the holder will be used. A single width measurement is rarely enough. Small changes in shape, cable placement, grip areas, or mounting clearance can determine whether a holder feels secure or frustrating.

Start with the object's maximum dimensions
Measure the widest, deepest, and tallest points of the object. Do not assume the middle is the widest section. Handles, buttons, clips, rubber feet, battery packs, and curved edges often extend beyond the main body.
- Width: the largest side-to-side measurement.
- Depth: the largest front-to-back measurement.
- Height: the total vertical measurement.
Record the units clearly. Millimeters are preferred for small fitted parts because they provide more useful precision, but inches can also work when the unit is stated.
Measure the area that actually touches the holder
A holder does not always need the dimensions of the entire object. It needs accurate measurements for the contact area. For example, a wall holder may support a handle, a narrow neck, or the base rather than the full product.
Identify where the object should rest and measure that specific section in several places. If the shape tapers, record both the narrow and wide points. If it is round, measure the diameter. If it is irregular, provide a top, front, and side photo with a ruler visible.
Allow for insertion and removal
The object must be able to enter and leave the holder without binding. Explain the intended motion: straight down, slide from the front, rotate into place, snap into a flexible clip, or rest on a shelf. A holder that fits the final position may still fail if the entry path is blocked.
Also identify anything that must remain accessible, including charging ports, cables, triggers, buttons, vents, labels, and removable batteries. These details help determine where openings or clearances belong.
Describe the installation surface
Measure the available mounting area, not only the object. Note whether the holder will sit on a desk, attach beneath a shelf, mount to a wall, hang from a pegboard, or fit inside a drawer.
Useful installation details include:
- Maximum available width and height.
- Shelf or panel thickness.
- Distance to nearby walls, doors, drawers, or other objects.
- Preferred mounting direction.
- Existing screw-hole spacing, when reuse is required.
- Whether adhesive, screws, magnets, or another method is planned.
Mounting hardware and surface strength must be chosen for the real load and installation conditions. A printed holder should not be treated as a substitute for appropriate anchors or structural hardware.
Use photos that remove ambiguity
Clear reference photos can often explain what measurements cannot. Photograph the object from the front, side, top, and the intended installed position. Keep the camera square to the object when possible to reduce perspective distortion.
Include a ruler or known-size reference in at least one image. Mark the desired contact points and areas that must stay open. Avoid screenshots from product listings as the only reference; manufacturer dimensions may describe packaging or overall size rather than the section that needs to fit.
State the intended use and environment
Explain whether the holder will be used indoors, in a garage, near a sink, inside a vehicle, or outdoors.
